The men and women that land the best jobs are no better than you are. They are no smarter, often are not more connected, and usually have less skills. Don’t believe me? Look at your current superior.

The question remains: why are they making 3X more than you? Simple. It’s because they know a few things that you don’t (yet). So, let’s fix that. As a resume maker, here’s what you need to know if you’re looking to call the shots and make the pots (of cash).

The real money isn’t marketed

Long ago, when I was in the real estate industry, I noticed a perplexing trend. The top 1% of my investor clients made more than the 99% below them COMBINED.

What was the difference? My top clients were more active in finding deals that weren’t on the market or advertised anywhere. Once the world knows about any opportunity (jobs included), the added competition kills the potential upside.

Keep that in mind in your job hunt. The best jobs are almost never found in the classifieds section. In fact, they’re often MADE by a smart go-getter that analyzes a company and sees a hole their personal skill set can fill. Write up a proposal, make it a profitable proposition for the company and you’re now officially in the big leagues.

Everything starts at the start

The active resume maker should know that, in no uncertain terms, your resume can make or break your chances of winning that dream job. Your resume is like your personal advertisement… your salesman in print.

If it’s a used car salesman (poor grammar, structuring mistakes, etc.), your chances of landing a killer job are slim. However, if it’s an Aristotle Onassis (killer design, proper grammar and structure, etc.), your chances of making more cash shoot through the roof.

So start at the start. Make your resume a work of art. The rest will take care of itself.

It’s all about substance

A mentor of mines often says “the world is awash in *explicative*… and starving for substance.” What he means is that the majority of people “talk the talk”, but can’t “walk the walk”.

For you, this means the resume maker process starts BEFORE you fire up Microsoft Word. It starts with you, and what you’re bringing to the table as a job hunter.

Fact is, the neighborhood dolt can write up a flowery resume. Hiring managers can see right through that. But Steve Jobs can write up a 150 word resume… on a napkin… and get a killer job.

He has substance and, judging from his keynotes, he knows how to express it. When you can do the same, you’ll eat the competition for breakfast.

And what all of this means to you

To be the best, do what they do. In the job market, that means prospecting for opportunities the same way the highest paid do it. Focus on the basics outlined in this article, think and act “outside of the crowd”, and I assure you that the fruits of your labor will be much sweeter.
