Let’s be honest: the U.S. job market isn’t what it was even a few years ago. The competition is fierce and for the active resume maker, even getting an interview feels like winning the Boston Marathon.

If you plan on landing a job with that shiny new resume you’re working on, there are a few things you must know. Without this information, kiss your chances of winning that well paying new job goodbye.

Let’s start from the top:

About format

Your dreams of a new gig begin and end with the format of your resume. This is also where the untrained resume maker is must likely to fumble. Here’s a basic guideline; stick to it and you’re already ahead of the game.

There are plenty of common formats out there. Stick to the known winner: Chronological

Enter promotions as new entries under your “job experience” section. Flesh out any additional responsibilities this title entailed.

Keep the format streamlined and to the point. Who you are – What you’ve done – Unique Qualifications – References is a safe bet.

Don’t get funky on the font and character size. Keep it professional… this is your first impression. If you’re in IT, this may not apply.

Keep the flowery language in your journal. Everything you write should be specific (i.e. managed 100 employees in various departments vs. showed spectacular coordination in the allocation of manpower.)

Please… use quality paper for your resume. The photocopied OfficeMax paper doesn’t speak so well for your personal brand.

About “Resume maker” services

There are a myriad of services, both offline and online, that you can commission to write your resume for you. There are both pros and cons for this approach, both of which are beyond the scope of this article.

However, if you of the following descriptions apply to you, I would suggest getting a writer:

If you are applying for a job outside of your native language, hire a writer. Don’t argue with me about this. Just do it.

If you’ve been applying diligently and can’t land an interview, hire a writer. Chances are it’s not you they don’t want to meet, but how your resume projects who you are. Or it could just be you… but it makes sense to spend a few bucks to find out.

If you suck at writing (be honest with yourself), then hire a writer. The cost is well worth the piece of mind that your resume is truly your “best foot forward”.

If interview begins with or alludes to “well, despite what I thought of your resume…”, then hire a writer.

Make sure to do some price shopping before hiring anybody. Some writers charge exorbitant fees simply because they market better. If you do the legwork of searching beyond the yellow pages, you’ll be rewarded with comparable quality at a much more agreeable price.

On a sidenote – many resume maker softwares available online are fantastic alternatives to professional writers. I would suggest exploring both options and weighing the pros and cons.

About grammar

This technically would fall under the bullet point about “if you suck as a writer”, but it’s important enough for me to rehash it here. I’ve reviewed a mountain’s worth of resumes with grammatical errors, so make sure to check before you send it. Then check again. This isn’t necessarily a deal breaker for employers (depending on the position) but you’ll fair much better if your resume is immaculate.

To wrap it up…

Those that know these things get their foot in the hiring manager’s door. Those that don’t get left out in the rain. So keep these things in mind when you’re crafting that knock-em-dead resume. Otherwise, it might be time to get your umbrella ready.

The men and women that land the best jobs are no better than you are. They are no smarter, often are not more connected, and usually have less skills. Don’t believe me? Look at your current superior.

The question remains: why are they making 3X more than you? Simple. It’s because they know a few things that you don’t (yet). So, let’s fix that. As a resume maker, here’s what you need to know if you’re looking to call the shots and make the pots (of cash).

The real money isn’t marketed

Long ago, when I was in the real estate industry, I noticed a perplexing trend. The top 1% of my investor clients made more than the 99% below them COMBINED.

What was the difference? My top clients were more active in finding deals that weren’t on the market or advertised anywhere. Once the world knows about any opportunity (jobs included), the added competition kills the potential upside.

Keep that in mind in your job hunt. The best jobs are almost never found in the classifieds section. In fact, they’re often MADE by a smart go-getter that analyzes a company and sees a hole their personal skill set can fill. Write up a proposal, make it a profitable proposition for the company and you’re now officially in the big leagues.

Everything starts at the start

The active resume maker should know that, in no uncertain terms, your resume can make or break your chances of winning that dream job. Your resume is like your personal advertisement… your salesman in print.

If it’s a used car salesman (poor grammar, structuring mistakes, etc.), your chances of landing a killer job are slim. However, if it’s an Aristotle Onassis (killer design, proper grammar and structure, etc.), your chances of making more cash shoot through the roof.

So start at the start. Make your resume a work of art. The rest will take care of itself.

It’s all about substance

A mentor of mines often says “the world is awash in *explicative*… and starving for substance.” What he means is that the majority of people “talk the talk”, but can’t “walk the walk”.

For you, this means the resume maker process starts BEFORE you fire up Microsoft Word. It starts with you, and what you’re bringing to the table as a job hunter.

Fact is, the neighborhood dolt can write up a flowery resume. Hiring managers can see right through that. But Steve Jobs can write up a 150 word resume… on a napkin… and get a killer job.

He has substance and, judging from his keynotes, he knows how to express it. When you can do the same, you’ll eat the competition for breakfast.

And what all of this means to you

To be the best, do what they do. In the job market, that means prospecting for opportunities the same way the highest paid do it. Focus on the basics outlined in this article, think and act “outside of the crowd”, and I assure you that the fruits of your labor will be much sweeter.

The internet is literally flooded with different types of resume maker software. The prices range from ridiculously low to stupidly high… but any one of them can be a rip off. How do you know which ones are worth the money? Here’s a few little nuggets of truth to point you in the right direction:

First things first, you need to know how resume maker software works so that you can justify spending the money. The benefit at the heart of every resume maker software is the ability to leverage technology to make writing your resume easier.

An example of this would be “mistake catching”. Most software has functionality that actually picks up on the most common resume mistakes and alerts you before you send it out to your potential employer. You save in having to hire a professional writer to proofread your resume, as the software will do it for you.

Another benefit is the templates that come with most resume maker software. One of the biggest stumbling blocks for job seekers is figuring out the ideal structure for their resume. Using a software takes the guesswork out of this process, giving you a list to choose from. And all of them are custom designed to grab the attention of the interviewer.

Being that everything is on your computer, saving your resume and sending it to the print shop is as easy as pressing a button. And, in a digital world where so much is conducted online, it’s also a snap to post to sites such as monster.com or craigslist.

Some resume maker softwares have killer guarantees as well, making a buying decision that much easier. The most common you will find is a 100% money back guarantee, so at the very least your investment is completely covered if you aren’t satisfied.

One product I can across a while back was offering a guarantee that if you didn’t land a job in 6 months they would give you 110% back… now that’s a guarantee with some teeth!

Of course, there are definite disadvantages to using resume maker software as well…

One being that others are using the same software. That means that somebody, somewhere has their resume in the same format as you.

However, this is largely a non-issue as the the chances of two different users of the same software applying for the same position are highly unlikely.

Another noticeable disadvantage being that some softwares just aren’t that easy to use or to figure out. If you aren’t tech savvy, I highly suggest looking for a software that scores highly for ease-of-use. There is nothing as frustrating as getting your new software home (or accessing it online) and not knowing what to do with it.

So, with all of this information firmly planted in mind, deciding whether or not resume maker software is right for you should be easy. Whatever you decide, I hope you’ve found this article useful and I wish you luck in your job hunt!

You’re looking for a job. The employer is looking for somebody of your experience and skill set. How do you make the magic happen? It all starts with your resume… follow these 4 steps, and even the mediocre resume maker can snatch jobs away from any competition.

Step 1: Shoot for the Bull’s Eye

The first thing you should do before typing up your resume is to get acquainted with your potential employer. As a resume maker, every section you include should be tailor fit to the employer and position you are targeting.

In a connected world, it’s easy to do the recon you need to do before writing a single word in your resume. Start with the corporate website. Next, try using a tool like Google news to see what’s happening around the company. After that, shoot over to Manta.com for some more statistic heavy research.

Every piece of information you can gather, the better. It’s the background information that will play the biggest part in determining whether your resume is a winner or a flop.

Step 2:Get to the point

Trust me, most hiring managers don’t have the time to read your life story. There is no point in writing up a resume that rambles for 20 pages. In fact, more times than not the “bulky bombshell” type resumes find their way directly into the garbage can.

Don’t be that guy (or gal). Instead just stick to the facts and keep your resume focused only on what matters to the job you’re after. If the employer gets a sudden urge to know what job you held as a sophomore in High School, rest assured that they will ask.

Step 3: Grab attention with your design
You only get one chance with hiring managers. Don’t waste it with a resume design that doesn’t grab them by the eyes. If your resume can be ignored, then it will be.

Structure your resume so that the most important things are close to the top. Use bullet points and subheads gratuitously. And, just as important, use high quality paper that feels good to the touch. All of these things will set you apart from the rambling, office max photocopying crowd that you’re competing against.

Step 4: Use the job description to your advantage

The fastest way to make a sale is to offer what the buyer wants to buy. Since getting a job is the same exact process, you would be well served to do the same.

Combing through the job description and any advertisements the company ran will tell you exactly what the employer is looking for. The smart resume maker will use this information as the key points in their resume.

For instance, let’s say that the ad states they are looking for somebody to coordinate company wide projects, with an eye for details. Very close to the opening of your resume, you want to wrap in details about your attention to detail and experience with multi-division projects.

If you don’t have specific “ammo”, use closely related information to bridge the gap. So your experience in C-level selling can be parlayed to alleviate a deficit in joint partner communication experience.

In conclusion

As a resume maker, landing your dream job is simply a matter of paying attention to the details. Keep your employer in mind, grab their attention and get to the point already! Stick to this guideline and your resume will virtually write itself.

The easiest way to gauge your talents as a resume maker is to look at your current salary. If you’re not happy with it, then let’s make a change. All you have to do is put these 3 strategies in effect to make sure your cashing in on your talents to your potential.

Strategy #1 – Tighten up your resume

The fact is that only the best brand of resume maker gets the cushy jobs. Those that can accurately describe what they bring to the table in a compelling way are the sweethearts of hiring managers and bosses alike. And this is, of course, done with an effective resume

Putting together an effective resume isn’t rocket science. As they say, “the devil is in the details”. Here’s some things you want to tighten up as you go through the resume maker process:

Spelling and grammar – This is the fastest way to blow your interview to smithereens. With the technology we all have at our disposal, making mindless spelling mistakes is inexcusable and shows a lack of focus. Not a great way to open a relationship with a potential employer.

Length – Nobody wants to read a novel when they don’t know the author. Don’t expect the hiring manager to be any different. Stick the the main points: Who you are, what you do, and why you’re right for the job you’re applying for.

Targeting – The job market is just like any other market. Your employer wants to feel that you care enough about the position to do some research ahead of time. Most of this will come out during the interview, but to even get an interview it makes sense to tailer-write each resume for the receiving recipient.

Strategy #2 – Bait Bigger Fish

It’s easy to feel unqualified after reading some of the job descriptions you’ll come across. Don’t let this be the case for you; those that land the best jobs are the ones that shoot for the stars.

At the very least, you’ll learn about the skill sets you need to develop to be a serious candidate for that particular job offering. Once you pick up that skill set (which you will if you really want that job), you’ll already have a foot in the door. Plus, your determination and commitment won’t go unnoticed by your potential employer.

Strategy #3 – Make offers

No matter how good your resume writing talents are, if you’re not putting your resume in front of anybody it isn’t likely you’ll land that dream job. Remember, being comfortable is a dream killer. Keep striving!

What this means in real terms is to send out a new offer at least twice a month if you currently have a job. If you’re unemployed you should be sending out resumes in a crazed frenzy. The more offers you make, the better your chances of landing one.

These are the basics, and all you’ll need in your quest for higher pay, better benefits and easier hours. Use these strategies in your resume, and you will be on your way to landing that job you’ve always wanted. See you at the top!
